Nothing Great Today

  • Wes Rea will have time to have an extended visit to Auburn in July. He has a baseball tournament in Auburn and plans to meet the football coaches.
  • Alec Ogletree has committed to UGA.
  • Another school that will for sure be in Khairi Fortt's top 5 is Penn State.
  • Auburn leads for OL/TE Dakota Mosley. Auburn is recruiting him as an offensive lineman. He visited Illinois this past week. He is teammates with Michael Dyer.
  • Jarrick Williams has committed to Alabama. Go figure.
  • Tyrik Rollison will wear number 17 at Auburn.
  • I will not have a signee profile today or tomorrow. I will pick back up with Deangelo Benton on Sunday.

  1. Man, looks like we are getting our butts kicked in recruiting...We're leading for one stars like Dakota and Alabama and Georgia just keeps taking the 4 & 5 stars right out from under us. I think all the hate on Tubbs was wrong. Auburn is just in a bad situation between programs like Georgia,Florida and Satans Alabama teams that are on top right now. Looks like it going to take some years before we rise again.

  2. I really hope AU fans will on day appreciate the job that coaches like Tubs did here. I seriously doubt AU will every consistently beat out the bamas and UGAs for 4 & 5 star recruits. However we will always hold our on on the field as long as we have innovative coaches that will work to find the diamonds in the rough and develop them into NFL talent. Our recruiting is going just fine. Just like it did most years under Tubs.

  3. we appreciate the work they did, but regardless his work greatly slipped. of the 59 players in his 2007 and 2008 classes, 32 of them aren't on the team. Kinda helps you realize why we are in the position that we are in

  4. Yes, if you look at the classes Tubbs signed and look at what we're getting now (and not getting)there isn't much difference. I was one who said Tubbs was a lazy recruiter and thought this new staff was going to bring in top recruits, but it doesn't seem they're getting done right now.I think Tubb realized we wouldn't be able to get the top recruits with the situation around us and took the only option with a chance to work. It just didn't work out. Tubbs always got a top 20 recruiting class but rare for a top 10. The current staff is not in the top 20 and will be lucky to match what Tubbs did. All the hate for Tubbs is just wrong.

  5. All of you past guys are way into the "stars" thing. Lets not forget it is not even July! Since you are so into the "stars" thing take a look at Wes Rea who is probably going to commit in July, oh yeah hes an OL where we have 0 depth! Does Dyer, Seastrunk, Benton, Aycock, Blake, Rollison ring a bell? These guys would have never even looked/signed at AU without the new staff. "If we biuld it, they will come"
    War Eagle!

  6. I've been hearing "probably going to commit" for the last two months when talking about the top notch recruits, but nothing happens. To the last guy. I hadn't heard that Dyer and Seastrunk has "signed" or even commite for that matter. Benton got ran off of his commit to LSU and Aycock and Blake are good, but not great commits. Rollsion is the one true elite recuit we got, but only because no schools like LSU,Georgia,Florida, etc. were recruiting him. If you look at Rea none of these teams are recuiting him. We are able to compete with FSU and UT right now, but when one of the LSU's of the world offer........We're out of luck.

  7. LOL! People talking like it's doomsday and it's only July! LOL! I saw this wrote on one blog yesterday...it's all in state recruits that these teams are getting and that is true. Our biggest recruits will come out of state this year. Now next year may be different. Did you honestly think Alec Ogletree was coming to AU over UGA? NO! What about Jarrick Williams, who thought that he wasnt already a bama lock? AU will do just fine and better than it has been under Tubbs, i hate to say. If we land just 1-2 of these between Dyer, Mack, Lattimore, Seastrunk and others, who i think we have a better than decent shot at, we will be doing better than we usually do. Also to have guys like Darius White, Ronald Powell, Khairi Fortt, Kyle Prater, and the countless other even interested in AU at this point after our coaching change and horrible season, speaks volumes for what these coaches are doing and are going to do. Time will tell.

  8. To 11:04 poster. I implied the last coaching staff would not have signed last years great players, and there is no way we could be getting a look from these top notch rb, wr, etc today. You say Aycock isnt great? He will be the Ronnie Brown of 2010 or 2011. Blake is a 6'1 200lb wr that runs a 4.5 all we have to do is throw the ball up and most times he beats a smaller defender. Same with Benton except he is 6'3 I could care less if he got run off or not. AU will be fine in '09!

  9. Luck is opportunity meeting preperation. The coaches least year put us in a position to snag a guy with 5 star talent at QB, a kid that everyone and their brother thought wasn't going to make grades...our coaches made the offer, took the calculated gamble, and we have a stud at QB. Blake got an offer from Texas freakin' Tech at WR- we stole a recruit from a team who puts Wideouts in the NFL like we put RB's. The fact that he even looked at us and passed on a team that throws the ball 50 times a game is amazing. I'll take LSU's leftovers with Benton- he's a stud! Anyone in the SEC (minus Florida) would have taken a commitment from him. To be a good recruiter at Auburn, you have to be opportunistic and that's exactly what these coaches are!

  10. lol. two players that were locks for their respective schools dont commit in late-june and our recruiting class is devastated?

most elite players aren't going to commit right now. the fact that we're leading for the two top backs in the nation and many other top players speaks volumes.

all of you doomsdayers need to wait until signing day to pronounce this coaching staff a recruiting failure. or at least maybe july....

    ReplyDelete
  11. Amen Anon! Wait until signing day....we will get a great class.

  12. The star system is something you can't look too far into, mainly because each football team has their own system. For our system, some coaches may rank 3* athletes over 5* athletes because the 3* athlete's skill set translates better to our system than the 5* athlete's skill set. Obviously, this isn't always the case and I would even say that it's not something that happens a lot, but it certainly does happen.

Just looking back at our previous recruiting classes, we have a few 5* and 4* athletes that I have never heard of. You also see a trend of 2* and 3* athletes like Pat Sims, Sen'derrick Marks, and Quentin Groves who we all know quite well to be some of the better players we have had over the last few years.

You have to trust the coaching staff's evaluations regardless of what their star may be. We lose a lot of highly touted athletes but keep in mind that we really don't know how highly touted these athletes are to our coaches.

Well, tell that to Nick Saban. That little no personality hobbit keeps getting "elite" player after player and it's only June. Let's not be so blind to what the truth is going on around us. We are getting whipped by Alabama in recruiting and that's just the way it is. Hopefully things change, but right now we've proven nothing in the recruiting game.

  14. okay its going to take longer than 8 months for us to regain a position in this state. We have already started getting people talking about us and within a year or two we will be back on top. It will take time and i'm sick of auburn people thinking that we are still at the top and will be an easy fix. Just let things work themselves out and eventually we will be back

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think what he meant was that most out of state elite players aren't going to commit, i know ogletree committed to georgia but that was a given and i would say give it two months or so and we will have dyer and seastrunk, they could change their minds but i don't see it happening, and just because a player commits to a school right now doesn't mean they are stuck there.. it's a LONG time till NSD and i think it's pretty apparent that kids can change their mind at any time

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ok it's time for some fans to have a reality check. 42 of Rivals top 100 players are committed right now. 13 of the top 18 players in the state of Alabama are committed right now. So so there is no need to fool yourself into thinking that most elite players dont commit early. Now as far as Alabama whipping us in recruiting...well that depends on your definition. If by whipping you mean that they are getting the best players in the State then you should be use to them whipping us and therefore should stop crying. At least since 2002, Auburn has never had the #1 player in state. That player has almost always gone to bama and when he didnt(2003 WR Chad Jackson-UF) we went out of state. Auburn has not gotten more than 5 of the top 10 in-state players since 2002. But we have more than held our own on the field so either our recruits werent as bad as rivals/scout would lead you to believe or our coaches were outstanding at player development. Perhaps a little of both, either way it's time for some folks to take a look under the AU hood and realize what has made this program great for so long and it aint 5* recruits or beating bama for the best in state players.

  17. AUBigCat, most top prospects do wait until the last possible minute to commit. Why do you think there were so many on site committments on NSD last year? It gave ESPN something to report about. Big time players love the attention, and they usually milk every school for what they are willing to give. Tubberville got tired of playing that game, and like everyone is now saying. He only started going after recruits that he and his staff knew they could win.

As for Alabama owning the state of Alabama, that simply is not true. Auburn and Alabama typically split somewhat down the middle in terms of recruiting this state.

As for your logic of going into other states (like how Tubberville got most of his players from Georgia, and Florida) I have no objection to that. Florida has the #1 high school football in the country. No state has produced NEARLY as many first round draft picks as the state of Floridav (I believe the number was high 50's. #2 was Texas...20 picks behind).

Tubberville had 4....FOUR coaches recruiting the state of Alabama. Most of them were getting whipped as well (James Willis for example. Then somehow shows up at Alabama and can recruit anyone) Chizik has realized that Alabama is where he needs to start. That is why he has 8 coaches divided up among the state (and they all got to pick the other states they wanted as well) I believe that Chizik realizing this is a great strategy. If Auburn can get Alabama recruiting back in order, the rest of the coaches have plenty of connections in other states (Malzahn-Arkansas, Roof-Georgia, Luper/Trooper-Oklahoma/Texas, Thigpen-Carolina, Even Chizik coached at UCF)

These coaches can also coach. I have dug it up before and posted it somewhere else. But Grimes has produced 12 draft picks(something like that, cant remember) and 11 all-conference players. Luper's RB's put up ridiculous stats wherever he was, Trooper as well. He has also produced 2 All-American recievers (Robert Meecham, and Dez Bryant) Roof took Minnisota from the #119 defense (LAST!) to middle of the pack. Malzahn coached a kid Mitch Mustain for a loooong time, and the two were able to start 8-0 at Arkansas (Until Nutt got scared about his job and yanked Mustain, who will probably start for USC this year, and basically cut Malzahn off from coordinating)

I can go on and on. But its late, and im tired. Beaver...wtf? Did Rivals (or Scout or whoever) shut you down? All weekend and no new post? I about killed myself. It could also explain all of this tension lol!

  19. LOL.....This guy post facts showing 42 of the top 100 players are commited and you got some guy saying they don't commit.LOL.....Take off your colored glasses.....FACTS ARE FACTS..

Victor Beasley (son of the former Auburn player) says that Alabama is his leader. He's a three star and only ranked #50 at that spot.
Can you spin that one for me?

  21. Hey everybody...damn I missed a long conversation...I will be posting a little catch up here in a bit...kind of took the weekend off...

    ReplyDelete
  22. LOL @ that Anon guy making the facts comparison. Would you like some facts?

Bryce Brown, #1 recruit last year. Waited so long that he started to lose scholarships.

Terrell Pryor, #1 recruit in 2008. Took absolutely forever. He just couldnt make up his mind if he wanted to play for tOSU ot PSU.

42 of the top 100 players may be committed. 7 of the top 10 however, are not. Of those 7 left, Auburn is competing for two of them. Of the top 20, 15 are left. Of those 15 left, Auburn is recruiting 5. So 42 of the "top 100" players may be committed. But, the TOP talent is still there for the pickings. You also have to remember that most of those players probably grew up liking the team they are now committed to. I.E. All players from Texas, and DeMarcus Millner. 42 isnt even a big number. If it would have been more around ~60, I would have been surprised. But, when its a low 40. That is far short of a "WOW" number. Last little "fact" for you, 4 of the 5 players are still uncommitted. The only one that is committed, Matt Elam, who grew up in Florida. I am also from Florida, and it is damn near impossible to find someone wearing something other than a Florida shirt, or saying they are a Florida "fan"

    Some more "facts" for you:
    2009 class
#1 Bryce Brown-3/16 (over a month after NSD)
    #2 Reuben Randle-2/4 (NSD)
    #3 D.J. Fluker-11/7 (Mid season)
#4 Sheldon Richardson-6/12/2007 (Summer before JR year?)
    #5 Matt Barkley-1/23/2008

So out of those top 5. Only one of them actually committed around a time pertaining to the current time frame. Matt Barkley. Richardson is from Missouri, and grew up a fan. So the minute they showed up at his door he asked where he could sign.

    2008 Class:
#1 Terrell Pryor-3/10 (Over a month after NSD)
#2 DaQuan Bowers-11/16/2006 (Visited junior year when he could make his committment official)
    #3 Mike Adams-3/10/2007
    #4 Julio Jones-2/6 (After NSD)
    #4 Patrick Johnson-Not listed

Of the 4 I could find. Only 1 committed before NSD. DaQuan Bowers was approached by Clemson when he was in 8th grade and said an offer would be on the table when he was eligable. It would be hard to turn something like that down.

    2007 Class:
    #1 Jimmy Clausen-4/22/2006
    #2 Joe McKnight-2/7/2007 (after NSD)
#3 Eric Berry-12/17/2006 (Recruited by Trooper btw. Didnt commit until he could go to a game)
    #4 Ryan Mallett 4/25/2006
#5 Carlos Dunlap 1/19 (2 weeks before NSD)

So that helps your argument a little. However, only 2 of those players committed during the offseason.

    2006 Class:
    #1 Percy Harvin 12/16 (During a visit)
#2 Andre Smith 2/1 (3 days before NSD)
    #3 Beanie Wells 2/6/2005
#4 Gerald McCoy 2/1 (3 days before NSD)
    #5 Sergio Kindle 4/8/2005

2 of the 5 committed during the offseason leading to their senior years. The rest waited, at least until the season was basically over.

As for spinning Beasley...what does it matter? He was shit talking Auburn not so long ago, and has Alabama as his leader. What a random name drop.

  23. Just thought I'd give my 2 cents. The issue with recruiting this year (and maybe next) is not so much to catch Alabama, but to re-assert ourselves back in front of Ole Miss and Miss St. Not sure Miss St ever got ahead of us, but UM was giving us fits (Enrique Davis! who by the way is on the bench behind a 3*). I realize many of you expect us to be out way ahead of the Mississippi schools, and I agree, but that's unfortunately not where we are.

Rather than looking at stars, look at who is recruiting a kid. That's is the most telling thing about a recruit's potential. If every semi-major program is after a kid, the kid will probably be good. If there is no BCS interest, then you're probably taking a big risk. I'd love for every unheralded recruit Auburn signs to be the proverbial "diamond in the rough", but if we are dependent on a bunch of those risks panning out, we are in trouble. The nice thing about the current roster of commits is that we are clearly fishing in more popular waters. These kids are being recuited by respectable programs, and in some cases they are extremely hot commodities (Mincy and Richardson come to mind, but Kitchens was also generating a lot of interest from mid-tier BCS programs; only Shun Coleman appears to be a we-discovered-him-first type of recruit). This is a far cry from the camp warriors that the previous staff was fighting with La Tech and USM and Troy for. I do believe that Tubby and his staff knew a good thing when they saw it, but I also think they started settling for the easy score rather than expending considerable energy upgrading a handful of the recruits, (or fighting for an academically qualified recruit over an academic risk, that appears to have been the main issue of Tubs last years).

It's also clear that this staff uses silent commits and other ploys to play the recruiting game, so Auburn's recruiting situation is never exactly what it seems what it seems. Think about it, your best recruiter is a kid that loves you but still takes visits to other high profile schools. It also helps a kid look more valuable if he hasn't committed early, so you can boost his stock by keeping him on the open market, even if he really isn't. Also, "suprise" announcements in January, or signing day probably provide more bang for the buck than summer commitments. I'm confident the previous staff wanted nothing to do with any system or media manipulation, just like I'm sure this staff is all over that stuff.

And Beaver, you have hit a sweet spot with this blog. Your not a beat writer so you can scrape the pay sites and broadcast rumors with abandon, and you seem more connected than the average fan-blogger. I love it.

And finally, anyone who put "LOL" in a comment should immediately be kicked in the nuts... hard.

  24. "It's also clear that this staff uses silent commits."
    --------------------------------
    What makes it clear?

I've heard that and just have a hard time believing it. Auburn is not in the spot to play that game in my opinion. I understand keeping one or two silent, but Auburn has yet to get a real big time commit that would open the door to other possible big names. I think if Auburn had one, they should let be known to get the Auburn name on the minds of others. You also gamble on losing that player too.

  26. you guys do realize that if 42 of the top 100 players are committed that means 58 aren't...meaning MOST of the top players aren't committed right now. not to mention the fact that many, many top players are going to wait until NSD. i'm a very cynical person, but to say we're failing at recruiting in late june is hilarious.

  27. btw...have you looked at the "elite 18" prospects in Alabama? If not...go to AL.com and look it up.

Auburn currently has 3 of the top 18. Of the 5 remaining, Auburn may lose one to Alabama. Then possibly Corey Grant to Florida
