Hawthorne Leaves Team

Junior receiver Tim Hawthorne will graduate from Auburn tomorrow and leave the team according to sources. Hawthorne will not return for his senior season nor the Outback Bowl after being plagued with injuries throughout his Auburn career.

  1. Not really, we are STACKED at receiver, Hawthorne knows he wouldn't see any playing time. This is actually a good thing as it opens up a scholarship. This doesn't hurt us one bit...wish Tim the best.

  2. Hawthorne is the poster child for the sucking vortex that was the Auburn wide receiver position. I'm actually kind of sad he never got a season to make good.

  4. How exactly does this effect our oppurtunities to pull in someone else? Can we bring another in Feb. or does it have to be another Dec. grad (if we can even do that...). Thoughts?

  5. Ryan, it doesn't affect our ability to recruit additional players this year, but the way I understand it, we can only have 85 players on scholarship, and if we bring in a full 28 person class this year + the 4 that signed and count toward last year, then we have 92 or 93 scholarship players. Some may not qualify, etc, etc, but if they all do the coaches will have to cut some people somewhere. Beaver, can you comment on this, you probably know more than I do.

  6. Here is what you should expect to see happen:
    1) Chizik and crew will get 33 Letters of Intent (including 5 early enrollers) come Feb 3.

    2) 3 of those players will either fail to qualify or grey-shirt.

    3) some players currently listed as commits may decommit in the next month as they will no longer be in our staff's plans (or they got pulled away). They obviously would not be included in the 33.

    4) Several players currently on scholarship at Auburn will leave the team. You just saw Hawthorne leave. There will be others, including those who have used up their eligibility (seniors). The result will be 30 scholarship vacancies. Chizik started opening up spots early in the summer with dismissals and the such. That was the real story as to why our scholarship numbers were down.

  7. Thanks for both of your opinions on the situation... I kinda figured his leaving wouldn't open up a spot for a new guy, but if there is an extra spot available after this roller coaster ride called recruiting is done, we may be able to award a walk-on a scholly

  8. its possible but I doubt it, I think we'll have to cull some scholarships...but who knows how things will work out.
