Former AU Assistant Passes

Charlie Waller, a former Auburn backfield coach under coach Shug Jordan in the 1950's, passed yesterday at the age of 87. The WWII veteran went on to coach in the NFL as an assistant and finally the head coach of the San Diego Chargers in 1969 and 1970.

His resume includes coaching Decatur High School in Georgia during the 1940's, an assistant at Auburn, Clemson and Texas in the 1950's and 1960's before becoming an assistant for the Chargers in 1966, head coach in 1969 and assistant for the Redskins after that. He finished his career coaching in the USFL.

His celebration of life service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Niceville, Florida.
