Big Cat Wrap Up

This weekend was one of the most unique unofficial recruiting tactics in recent memory.  Here is the details that have come out:
  • Eric Mack, one of the top offensive tackles in the nation has said that Auburn is now his leader.  He is planning two separate trips to Auburn before signing day, one unofficial for the West Virginia game and the other an official in January.
  • Lache Seastrunk said the trip actually topped his first trip to Auburn that he called the best experience he has had.  He will wait to commit anywhere until the Army All-American Game.  He said he will likely visit for the Iron Bowl.
  • Marcus Lattimore said the trip was great and that Auburn is still his number one.   Later he said he did not have a leader but trimmed his list to Auburn, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Clemson, Penn State, Florida State and Maryland.
  • Trovon Reed said he does not have a list but if he did Auburn would be high on it.
  • Rumors had swirled that Shon Coleman may be wavering on his commitment but after this weekend he says he is "locked in" on Auburn.
  • Khairi Fortt said Auburn definitely moved up his list.
  • LaDarius Owens said he still doesn't have a leader but Auburn seriously helped themselves this weekend.
  • Jessel Curry says he is still committed to West Virginia but that Auburn is now in his top two.
  • Auburn will review possibly secondary recruiting violations from this weekend.  More here.

Rolling The Corner

http://rollingthecorner.blogspot.com/

Wow

This was big to me at least.  When Marcus Lattimore was interviewed regarding this weekend, he said he discussed playing with Lache Seastrunk in college.  Lattimore said that if they played together it would be at Auburn.  I thought this was absolutely great news.  Lattimore says Auburn is still his number one but he is not ready to make a decision yet.

Updates

  • Everyone go to Toomer's Corner at 9 PM tonight and roll it.  It is a part of Big Cat Weekend.
  • Eric Mack is on his way right now but was unable to make it last night.
  • James Stone and JC Copeland were unable to attend.
  • More to come on the Big Cat Weekend.

The Auburn Carnival

Details have been released regarding this weekend's recruiting extravaganza in Auburn, AL and it sounds more like a elementary school "Fall Festival" than a recruiting weekend.  Festivities included are a pie eating contest, video game playing, a home run contest and "a hang out".  The dress code is t-shirts and flip flops.

HUGE WEEKEND: The "Big Cat Weekend"

Here is a list of known recruits in town this weekend:

LaDarius Owens

LaDarius Owens is likely to be a four star on Rivals according to Jamie Newberg the next time the rankings are adjusted.

It's Official: 28

The SEC has officially set the number of signees allowed per class at 28.  This comes after Ole Miss signed 37 this past signing class.  The article is here.

OT Picks Up Offer

Offensive tackle Wes Rea picked up an offer from Auburn to create a total of 16 offers.  He is also a coveted baseball recruit and will have to choose between football and baseball.  He will decide in July what he plans to do.

Dyer Sets A Visit

Michael Dyer, the third best running back in the nation according to Rivals, will visit Auburn on June 13th and 14th.

Demond Delayed

Demond Washington ended up three hours short of being able to transfer to Auburn for summer classes but is taking an English class online.  He will be in Auburn by July.  Also, the final date for the ACT test is June 13.  Signees Izauea Lanier and LaVoyd James need to raise their scores as of now.  Also, Brandon Jacobs is expected to be drafted in the MLB draft and will decide between that and Auburn football.

Lowder Retiring From Colonial

Auburn trustee and possibly the most influential booster in college football, Bobby Lowder, is leaving his bank.  Link.

OT Picks Up Offer

The 36th ranked offensive tackle in the nation according to Rivals, Aleon Calhoun, got offered by the Tigers recently without any prior contact with the staff.  The Texas tackle has never visited Auburn but says he will seriously consider them.

Powell To Walk On

Hartselle center Russell Powell will be a preferred walk-on this season.  He says he planned on attending Auburn if he was not going to play football in college anyways.  He had interest from Air Force, Birmingham-Southern, North Alabama and Jacksonville State.  He does not have a profile on Rivals or Scout.  He will be used as a blocking back.

Recruiting Cap??

The SEC is considering setting a cap of the amount of signees allowed per recruiting season at 28.  Read the article here.

A Few Notes

  • Victor Beasley has named his top 5 as ECU. Auburn, Duke, Clemson and Alabama.
  • Barry James will camp at Auburn on June 13-14.  He will also camp at Florida State, LSU and Alabama.
  • Some other 2011 offers on the table include James Wilder and AJ Johnson.
  • There were a few changes made to the way the USA Today Top 25 poll.  Click here for more details.
  • Travis Dickson says he plans on visiting Auburn, Mississippi State, LSU and Ole Miss this summer.
  • In a Q&A session, head coach Gene Chizik stated that he wants to settle on one quarterback.  He made a point to say that he is not cancelling out the possibility that Auburn could use more than one quarterback.

Chizik

Coach Gene Chizik will speak at the Montgomery Auburn Club on June 9.

Jarrick Williams

Jarrick Williams told CrimsonConfidential that it is a two horse race now for him.  It will be between Auburn and Alabama.  He says they are neck and neck and he will pick whichever feels more like home.
  • Also, Davis Dudchock says he wants to make his decision in late summer or at the beginning of his season.

Also

  • We lead for a 2011 DT from Carver.  His name is Gabriel Wright and looks like a stud.  He says he has an offer from Auburn along with Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina.  We lead along with Ole Miss, USC, Georgia and Tennessee.
  • We offered two JUCO players recently.  Joel Bonomolo, who is a strongside defensive end from Fullerton, CA (same school as John Cullen) and Dquan Menzie, who is a cornerback from Copiah-Lincoln CC which is a school that Auburn often has ties to.
  • We have offered another 2011 prospect.  Tucker, GA star linebacker James Vaughters has picked up offers from just about every other southeastern school.  Check this kid out, should be one of the top 2011 players in the southeast:

Update

  • Evan Washington's coach said it looks like he will visit Auburn, USC, Alabama, Miami, Oklahoma State and Nebraska this summer.
  • DeMarcus Milliner visited Auburn this weekend and said it went good.  He told Bryan Matthews of AuburnSports.com that Alabama is in the driver's seat.  That should not surprise anyone.  I think he will be 'Bama bound by the end of summer.
  • Ryan Ayers took in Georgia this weekend.  He will be on the Plains visiting sometime this summer.
  • Five star Ronald Powell seems to show some interest in Auburn and has flown under a lot of AU fans radars.  He says he grew up an Auburn fan and has family in Alabama.  He will be hard to steal from the west coast but often has said he wants to play in the SEC.  He has only really visited Southern Cal but look for him to visit Tennessee, Auburn and Florida.  Location really does not seem to be a factor for this California prospect.
  • Deion Belue has said that Auburn is still his leader.
  • Former Auburn player Rod Hood has signed with the Cleveland Browns.  He was released by the Cardinals about a month ago.
  • ESPN's network will broadcast the 11:30 am games this season that Raycom used to televise.  They could show on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN360 and others to broadcast this game.
  • Although we have not picked up a commitment since the spring game, Curtis Luper called this last week "phenomenal" in recruiting.   He said every move in the last month has been planned out and strategic.
  • Corey Grant missed the 6A 100 meter dash state record by 0.07.  He ran a 10.51 and roasted other such as Solomon Patton and Demarcus Milliner.  Opelika star Grant plans to visit Auburn and Alabama this summer.

Update

Not a lot has been going on.  Nasty rainy day here in the 'Burn.
  • John Cullen has picked up a few more offers.  Auburn is still his favorite but he will wait until Signing Day to commit.
  • Tyrone Cornileus says all schools are even right now for him.
  • Eric Mack says he is "wide open" right now and will not even cut his list down until December after some visits.
  • Steven Atwater, son of NFL great Steve Atwater, says he hopes to receive an offer from Auburn.  Atwater, Sr. played at Arkansas.
  • Khairi Fortt says he wants to visit Auburn.  Fortt says he is very interested in Auburn and that the coaches weren't really recruiting him and he sent them his tapes.  He is a four star linebacker from Connecticut.
  • I'm hearing Marcus Lattimore may visit next weekend.  Nothing concrete yet.
  • Jawara White is planning on visiting next weekend.

Ogletree Update

Alec Ogletree, one of if not the top safety in the nation, has named his favorites.  They are Miami, Georgia, Florida State, Auburn and Florida.  He also mentioned that Alabama is close to becoming a favorite and admitted that he may make a decision before the season begins.  He is the number 29 overall player in the nation according to Rivals.

Birthday Notes

Hey guys...happy birthday to me.  Here's what I got:
  • Lache Seastrunk told USC's Rivals page that he is trying to figure out what recruiters are for real and who is not.  He reaffirmed that Auburn is the stand out school right now.  He also said he is not ready to cut schools and that at the Army All-American Game he has a "surprise" for people but will not reveal what it is.
  • Davis Dudchock plans on attending camp on the Plains this summer.  He will visit Stanford this week.
  • Marcus Lattimore received an offer from South Carolina but says Auburn is still his leader.
  • Classes began today for the first "minimester" of summer.  It will run until June 27 I believe.
  • That is really all I have for now.  Having a beer or three to celebrate the big day.

Gabe Is Back

Gabe McKenzie is back with the team after an undisclosed situation held him out of spring ball according to Gene Chizik.  The tight end and defensive end will be back working out with the team and will continue to work through what Chizik called "health issues" but is excited to watch him make progress.

Out Of Top For Dyer

TigerBait.com talked to five star running back Michael Dyer recently about his spring and his future plans.  When asked to name favorites he named Arkansas, Alabama, Oklahoma and LSU.  He did say that he plans to attend summer camps at Auburn, LSU, Notre Dame and Tennessee.

Billings Returning?

Gene Chizik finally stated what we all already knew.  They had been covering up Montez Billings as having an unspecified injury but, on Monday, Chizik stated that they are trying to clear up an "academic issue".   Just two weeks ago, Trooper Taylor said that he did not expect to have Billings in the fall.  The way Chizik has been speaking about this situation leads me to think there is a good but not great possibility that Billings will be back for the 2009 season.  He caught 24 passes for 277 yards last season as a junior.

Catch Up Post

Sorry again I hope you all did not give up on me!  Very unexpected trip to the mountains.  From now on I will post before I do anything like that.
  • Big time target J.C. Copeland has committed to Tennessee.  Copeland named Auburn his leader just a week or two ago.
  • DeAngelo Benton has reported to Auburn which looks like it puts down the Arkansas rumors.  He told Rivals that he is the happiest man in the world right now.
  • Three star Hoover defensive tackle Jeremiah Jackson has named Auburn and Ole Miss as his leaders.
  • Ted Roof visited Anthony Williams' practice last week.
  • Four star 2009 commitment Reggie Taylor will go to JUCO this season at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.  Eltoro Freeman went there last year.  Because of this, Robert Cooper has been offered his scholarship.
  • Craig Sanders has committed to Alabama.  That is all I will say about that.  Not too happy about that one.
  • Auburn has offered Vic Beasley.  He is son of former Auburn defensive back Victor Beasley (1982-84).  He also has an offer from East Carolina.
  • West Virginia commitment Jessel Curry is reportingly looking at Auburn since receiving an offer.  Rivals lists him as an outside backer but I see him at fullback a lot of places.
  • Gene Chizik's contract offer has been released.  Page 1 and page 2. $1.9 million, nice.
  • Mack Brown told Auburn Undercover that Auburn "stands at the top".  I do not take that as Auburn as an absolute leader.  Probably just a top choice right now.
  • Solomon Patton has named his favorites at Florida, Alabama, Southern Miss and Ole Miss.
  • That's all I have got for now.

Sorry Guys

I've been out of town since the last update.  I had no phone/internet/cable.  Big update coming today.

Former head coach Tommy Tuberville will work for BusterSports.com next season.  He will contribute on multiple shows each week, including podcasts.  He will be able to communicate with SEC fans via chat rooms, messages boards and call-in questions.

Interesting Article

Thought some of you might want to read this.  I will not post articles concerning other schools except in this case since it pertains to former Coach Gran. Kind of...

Rivals Stars Update

For some reason, all kickers on Rivals are back to zero stars.  Yesterday, Cody Parkey was given three stars and listed the fifth best kicker in the nation.  Today, stars are gone and there is no longer a position ranking for kickers.  I will see what the deal is and let y'all know.

Mack Names Leader, New Rivals 250 Revealed, Dyer and Coleman

  • Rivals 250 four star offensive lineman Eric Mack has named his top 4.  They are Auburn, South Carolina, Clemson and Georgia Tech.  He made a point to say Auburn was special because it reminds him of where he is from.  Auburn and Clemson are recruiting him as a tackle while the others are recruiting him as a guard.
  • The new Rivals 250 has been released.  No major changes that affect Auburn commitments or targets.
  • Auburn commitment Shon Coleman will reportedly visit and camp at Tennessee this summer.
  • Gus Malzahn visited Michael Dyer's high school on Monday.  Although contact is not allowed between coaches and players right now, Dyer says he was happy Malzahn was there.

Former Auburn Tight End Indicted

Former Auburn and current Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Anthony Mix has been indicted on charges of allegedly having consensual sex with a 15 year old girl.  Mix is currently in Florida working out with the Bucs and has not been arrested yet for misdemeanor charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.  He played at Auburn from 2002 to 2006.  Prior to playing for the Buccaneers, Mix spent the last two seasons with the Giants and the Redskins.  More to come.

Blackmon Signs

Tray Blackmon has signed with the CFL's Calgary Stampeders.  More to come if more is released surrounding it. Article here.

Milliner Now Five Star, Climbs Rivals 100

After DeMarcus Milliner's impressive combine workout this weekend, he is now a Rivals five star.  The updated Rivals 100 came out today with a few changes.  Milliner is now the number nine player in the nation, up from 30.  Auburn running back target Roy Finch cracked the Rivals 100 for the first time coming in at number 77.  It has been a weak class for quarterbacks so far with the top qb, Alabama commitment Phillip Sims, coming in at number 58.
  • Also, as I previously reported, Auburn only has one offer out for the 2011 class.  Enrique Florence, a star safety and likely the top prospect from Alabama next season, has already named Auburn as his leader.  He ran a 4.47 40 at this weekend's combine in Vestavia.  He also has offers from Alabama and UAB.
  • ESPNU 150 Watch List offensive guard Ashton Duhe named Auburn in his top five.  Others on the list include LSU, Alabama, Louisiana Tech and Clemson.  He currently only holds offers from Louisiana Tech, SMU and Louisiana Lafayette.  He says LSU is his dream school.

Late Night Studying Notes

Finals are about halfway done.  I have one Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and then freedom!  Until summer classes at least.  I only have a few more notes for today:
  • Prattville athlete Sam Gibson told SuperPrep.com that he believes the next offer he will receive will be from Auburn.
  • 2010 commitment Jake Holland also says he has been talking to many other recruits and trying to recruit them to Auburn.  He says he feels like many are very close to committing.
  • Coaches are back out on the road doing spring evaluations for the 2010 class.
  • Bo Jackson will speak at graduation.  Commencement takes place May 9 and 2,823 degrees are expected to be handed out.
  • 2009 signees Nick Fairley has been cleared by the NCAA to attend Auburn.  He and DeAngelo Benton will report to Auburn on May 20.  Summer classes begin the 21st (which just so happens to be my birthday, mark that on the calendar).
  • Paul Finebaum's new article might surprise some Auburn fans.  He says Auburn's Tiger Prowl has gotten the best of Nick Saban.  Full article here.

Two Recruiting Notes

  • Four star receiver Jeremy Richardson says that the Tiger Prowl solidified Auburn as his number one.  However, he still plans to wait out the recruiting process and not commit to anyone too early.
  • Four star athlete DeMarco Cobbs named Auburn to his top 10.  Others on the list include: Arizona, Alabama, Oklahoma, USC, FSU, Florida, LSU, Georgia and Tennessee. The Oklahoma native says that location has zero affect on his decision.  He projects to play receiver at the next level.

Weekend Wrap Up

Hey everyone.  Finals end Thursday so bear with me.  Here's some notes for the weekend:
  • Today was the Elite Action Combine.  I have a few quick notes from that:  the state of Alabama's top prospect, Demarcus Milliner, ran a 4.31 on the 40 yard dash.  Milliner claims his all time fastest time at 4.28.  Milliner also recently discussed the Tiger Prowl.  He said that it made an impact on him.  He said what really affected him was all seven coaches visiting.  He said he likes "that Auburn is headed back to being a winning program".
  • Auburn commitment Jake Holland posted a 4.53 40 but by the time he ran it was steadily raining.  Auburn target Sam Gibson ran a 4.55.  Former 2010 commitment B.J. Chitty ran a 4.52 and corner back target Dale Trimble ran a 4.53.
  • From an interview with GamecockCentral, Marcus Lattimore says Auburn is still on top.  He also said that he does not intend to graduate early and join a school in the spring semester.
  • Trovon Reed told Warchant.com that he intends to visit Auburn, LSU, USC and Oregon over the summer.
  • CollegeFootballNews.com rated the top 10 new coordinators for the 2009 season.  New defensive coordinator Ted Roof came in at number ten and offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn came in at number one.  They stated that if the risk pays off with Malzahn, it could takes years for the SEC to catch up.
